Volunteer profiles

Richard Meagher is a Psychology student who visits asylum seekers at Villawood Detention Centre and helps out with general administration duties at JRS:

'I chose to volunteer with JRS because of my experiences with strangers welcoming me overseas. It was also explained to me that I could make a meaningful contribution to asylum seekers', he says. 'I have made some great friendships, learnt a lot about different cultures, and am continually having my understanding of what it is to be an asylum seeker developed.'

Elizabeth 'Benny' O'Brien is a registered nurse who has worked in health policy and research for a number of years. She helps JRS with office systems and grant applications:

'I wanted to assist an organisation that provides a welcome to those less fortunate than us, who are often alone and need help,' she says.
