Christmas Island asylum seekers may be moved to Darwin

The Christmas Island detention centre is so full the federal government is reviewing on a weekly basis whether to shift some asylum seekers to Darwin. Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor has acknowledged the pressures on the facility, according to a report in the Australian. 'It's closer to capacity than we would prefer,' he told the Macquarie Radio Network. Asked whether it could cope with another 200 arrivals he said it would depend on a range of factors. In her poem about Kakuma, a sprawling camp of 61,285 African refugees in northwestern Kenya, 15-year-old Amina Osman begins, 'In Kakuma life is pain. I am five and life is pain.' She ends her poem on a far happier note, 'I am 16, life is shining.' A Somalian refugee, Amina now attends the Global Village School, which opened in August to educate teen survivors of war. Send asylum seekers to the back of the queue: Fielding

Family First Senator Steve Fielding says the Federal Government should consider sending asylum seekers who arrive by boat to refugee camps in other countries because they are 'jumping the queue'. ABC news reports that the Government has been dealing with an influx of asylum seekers coming to Australia by boat, with the 21st vessel this year being intercepted yesterday.

Bangladesh 'ignoring plight' of starving Burma refugees

An American medical charity has warned that thousands of Burmese refugees in Bangladesh are facing starvation. The BBC reports that Physicians for Human Rights said government authorities are preventing the Rohingya, a Muslim minority, from receiving adequate care.
