24 July: Sydney – JRS Winter Solstice Ball

The JRS Winter Solstice Ball is an annual fundraiser aimed at young adults aged 18-30.  The inaugural ball was held in Sydney in June 2003 with the aim of raising money and awareness for society's most vulnerable people, refugees and asylum seekers. The idea for the ball was originated and nurtured by a group of former Jesuit school students. Today it is organised by a committee of men and women who are passionate about putting into practice their commitment to social justice and a fairer society for all.

Although it it JRS Australia's largest single fundraising event, the ball is about more than just money; it is about being involved in the struggle to help alleviate the suffering of refugees both in Australia and overseas. Funds raised in 2009 went to the JRS Shelter Project in Sydney and to education and peace-building program in southern Sudan.

'We can, at times, be too isolated, and not realise that a crisis of this proportion is happening in the rest of the world,' says the Director of JRS Australia, Fr Sacha Bermudez-Goldman. 'The circumstances and needs of asylum seekers and refugees, not only in Australia but also all over the world, are always evolving and changing, as it is the way people perceive those needs.'
