Volunteer locally

JRS welcomes local volunteers who wish to assist us in activities such as compiling newsletters and assisting with fundraising and advocacy work. Please contact us for further details or if you wish to register your interest, please download our Local Volunteer Application Form Local Volunteer Application Form and return to us by mail, fax  or email.

Volunteering internationally

In cooperation with JRS International and JRS Asia-Pacific, the Sydney office interviews, briefs and sends volunteers overseas. Field visits, letters, e-mails and a newsletter are important in keeping JRS fieldworkers in touch with JRS in Australia and elsewhere. JRS will provide airfares and health insurance for successful applicants to work in the field. On their return, volunteers are assisted in re-entry and resettlement, including being offered formal de-briefing.

You must:

  • desire to serve refugees and asylum seekers
  • be available for a placement of 2 years or longer
  • have flexibility of temperament and be able to understand refugees and their situations without losing objectivity
  • specialise in education, counselling, rehabilitation, management, or training others, and
  • have some overseas experience, preferably with refugees.

You will also need:

  • acceptance of a simple lifestyle
  • openness to community living
  • willingness to participate in a faith community.

JRS pays agreed preparation expenses, return airfares, health and accident insurance, local living expenses, a stipend and a small contribution to resettlement (unless these are provided by a sponsoring partner).

Contact JRS Australia Office about Volunteer Opportunities or register your interest by sending your CV to our office via mail or email.
